From Poaching Talent from Google to Defeating Humble Song: An Intelligence Battle

OpenAI is working intensively on developing an AI search product, which is about to go live very soon. This product has already attracted some domestic netizens to participate in gray testing, and their feedback indicates that the effect of the product is quite satisfactory.

It is reported that when using this search tool to ask questions about the Apple launch event, the AI’s workflow reveals that it first searches for information via the Bing search engine, then provides links and summaries, showing accuracy and response speed that are quite good. Similarly, when asked about real-time news content from the Hacker News aggregator, the AI can also provide highly accurate results.

However, there seems to be certain limitations in language processing for this product. If asked a question in Chinese, it may respond in English. Additionally, for real-time changing information, such as Bitcoin prices, the product’s feedback has shown a certain level of inaccuracy.

Meanwhile, Smart Emergence has compared other AI search tools like Perplexity AI in similar inquiries about Apple launch summaries and found that the results from OpenAI and Perplexity AI were similar. In terms of understanding user intent, the OpenAI model seems to perform better, especially on simple query tasks like Bitcoin prices, where OpenAI has shown its strength.

Nevertheless, there is still room for improvement in real-time information extraction for OpenAI’s search product. Besides the product’s capabilities, basic elements such as the user interface (UI) in the gray testing were almost similar to ChatGPT, typically with annotations added at the end of each conversation.

The real difference between the user experience of OpenAI’s official AI search product and the final version will only be known after the product is officially released. Regarding the launch date, there have been leaks suggesting the search engine might be announced on May 9 local time. Despite potential adjustments to the release schedule, if OpenAI can launch their search product on the eve of Google’s annual “Google I/O” conference, it will undoubtedly attract a great deal of attention.

In the midst of OpenAI’s closely watched actions, a new development is gradually coming to light. Recent signs indicate that OpenAI might soon launch a new search engine service. It is noted in a recent security certificate log that a subdomain named search.chatgpt.com has appeared, which is currently inaccessible, suggesting that the organization’s search engine might be making its debut soon.

As it continues to evolve, there are reports that OpenAI is developing search functionality for ChatGPT. Future user answers might include references to Wikipedia content, blog posts, and other online information. What’s more intriguing is that in some cases, the search engine can generate image answers based on questions, such as a flowchart showing how to replace a door handle, not just limited to textual answers.

Furthermore, OpenAI in a recent updated article has repositioned its product as an increasingly useful discovery engine, a statement revealing their boundless ambition in building a search product.

In the realm of search technology, as an unparalleled giant, Google’s leading position seems unshakeable. However, with the integration of AI technology, the field of search services may be facing a transformative change. The traditional keyword-matching logic of search engines may become outdated, gradually evolving into AI conversational search, signifying a fundamental shift in the way information is acquired.

The AI startup Perplexity AI has proposed an unusual search solution. The search experience they provide is different from Google’s. The answers obtained by users are precisely filtered, directly summarized, and thoughtfully provided with source links. Unlike the current search engines in the market, Perplexity AI does not add any advertisements when returning results. Reportedly, Perplexity AI has gained considerable attention, with its active users and search volume constantly growing.

However, despite the strong growth momentum shown by Perplexity AI, Google’s monopoly position in the search engine market remains impregnable. According to statistics, Google’s market share exceeds 80%, making it an unmatched leader. Long-accumulated big data advantages, high user familiarity, and trust pose a formidable challenge for newcomers.

As for the potential trend of monetization or subscription of AI search services in the future, if Perplexity AI and OpenAI cannot provide services that users deem worth paying a premium for, consumers may continue to be loyal to Google’s products.

With OpenAI entering the search engine field, the industry is full of expectation whether it can challenge Google’s dominance of more than twenty years. It is reported that OpenAI’s newly launched search product has received partial support from Microsoft’s Bing search engine. This move has not only attracted market attention to a slight increase in Bing’s market share but also signifies the potential impact of collaboration with GPT technology.

Nonetheless, there are also skeptics. They point out that despite the recognized quality of OpenAI’s services, significant issues remain. Taking ChatGPT as an example, even though it can automatically retrieve information from the web and process simple queries, such as weather conditions, it has made mistakes in citing sources. For example, in response to the query “What did President Biden do this weekend?”, it inaccurately cited an outdated article from last year.

Technologically, OpenAI certainly has shown its advantages. Yet, this also leads to speculation that OpenAI may be feeling anxious about its consistently growing traffic and is thus eagerly pushing the development of its search business to scale up. Whether OpenAI will become overextended due to handling too many tasks at once is a question that deserves continuous attention.
